Vehicle-related theft -- British Crime Survey data
Source: The British Crime Survey (BCS)
How the British Crime Survey (BCS) works
- For a variety of reasons, people do not always report crimes to the police - which means they don't get reflected in police recorded crime figures.
- The British Crime Survey (BCS) asks people about their actual experiences - and so gives us a more accurate picture of crime levels and trends across England & Wales. (more...)
Note: This BCS page is only about vehicle-related thefts and attempted thefts. For other types of theft, see Non-vehicle-related thefts - British Crime Survey data.
According to the BCS:
- In 2005/06 the number of vehicle-related thefts in England and Wales was around 1,731,000 - an 8% fall on the previous year.
Of these, around:
- 185,000 were thefts of vehicles
- 1,211,000 were thefts from vehicles
- 425,000 were attempted thefts
- Vehicle related offences peaked in 1995 at 4,350,000 incidents and has fallen by 60% between 1995 and 2005/06.
- In 2005/06 around 7% of vehicle-owning households experienced some type of vehicle related-theft.
